Claremont Real Estate: A Neighbour’s Guide to North Pickering’s Village

Pull up a chair. If you’re curious about Claremont, I’m probably the most excited real estate agent you’ll talk to about it, because my family and I are making Claremont home.

My wife and I, and our two girls (they’re 5 and 7), are super excited to be part of this community. With two young kids, parks and school are at the top of our list. Good coffee is a close second. Priorities.

So here’s what I’ve learned about Claremont, the way I’d tell a neighbour. Plain talk, no sales pitch.

Short answer: Claremont is a small, protected village in north Pickering, Durham Region, about 40 km northeast of downtown Toronto as the crow flies. It sits in the Greenbelt on the Oak Ridges Moraine, so it stays small. It has its own kindergarten-to-grade-8 public school, and the Highway 407 interchange at Brock Road is about 10 minutes south.

Why does Claremont feel so different?

Short version: it’s protected. The City of Pickering treats Claremont as a rural hamlet, like Greenwood and Whitevale. And the provincial Greenbelt Plan doesn’t let hamlets spread outward. New homes come mainly from minor infill.

In real life, that means the village you like today is likely the village you’ll still have years from now. With kids, I find that reassuring.

Is anything new being built?

A little, and carefully. In 2022 the Ontario Land Tribunal approved a 71-lot subdivision on about 34 hectares at 5113 Old Brock Road, inside the hamlet. It includes new roads and a 1.7-hectare park.

What should I know about the Oak Ridges Moraine?

It’s beautiful, and it comes with a little homework. Much of the land around Claremont falls under the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan, which can affect additions, pools or outbuildings on some properties.

My advice: planning a big project? Check it with the City of Pickering’s planning department before you firm up an offer. And give the Claremont Drainage Plan (December 2022) a read. It deals with localized surface flooding in the hamlet.

What about school?

With a 5- and a 7-year-old, this was one of the first things we looked into. Claremont Public School (DDSB) on Central Street runs from kindergarten to grade 8.

One tip: boundaries can shift as north Pickering grows, so always confirm your exact address with the DDSB school locator.

Can you live here and still get to work?

Yes. Most people here drive. The Highway 407 interchange at Brock Road is about 10 minutes south, and it’s where the provincial Highway 407 begins. It runs east to Highway 35/115 in Clarington, and west you connect to the 407 ETR toward York Region and Toronto.

Prefer the train? Pickering GO on the Lakeshore East line is a short drive further south.

What do people do for fun?

On the second Saturday in June, the annual Yard Sale Day takes over the village. In 2026 it ran on June 13 as Yardstock. With two kids in the house, I suspect my wallet should be nervous.

And a bit of local trivia I love: Claremont is the birthplace of Tom Thomson, one of Canada’s best-known painters, born here on August 5, 1877.

A word from me

My wife, our two girls and I are super excited to be part of the Claremont community. We can’t wait to get to know our neighbours. If you’re thinking about a move here, or a move out, I’d love to grab a coffee and talk it through, neighbour to neighbour.

Is Claremont right for you?

If you want space, quiet and a real village around you, and you don’t mind driving for the bigger errands, it might be perfect. Either way, I’ll give you a straight answer.

Selling your Claremont home?

There aren’t many homes in the village, so there aren’t many direct comparables. Pricing takes judgment. I look at hamlet, rural and nearby north Pickering sales, then share your home’s story (the lot, the trees, the quiet) with buyers across Durham and the GTA who are looking for exactly that.

Curious what it’s worth? Start with a free home evaluation, or book a seller consultation and we’ll plan it together.

Hoping to buy here?

I’ll flag well, septic and Greenbelt questions early and connect you with the right inspectors, lawyers and the City of Pickering planning department. Listings are rare, so being ready matters. Set up listing alerts so you hear first, and book a buyer consultation.
